Sophie Whettnall

Co-president of the Jury

Sophie Whettnall is a multidisciplinary artist (video, performance, drawing, painting) who, since the 1990s, has explored the forces shaping our relationship with the world. Her work highlights the tensions between presence and absence, visibility and disappearance, and questions thresholds: the horizon fading, light turning into shadow, the broken balance between humans and their environment. Her recent projects address the disappearance of the landscape, both as an ecological phenomenon
and as a symbolic erasure from memory. She often uses fragments, traces, and simple gestures to express the fragility of our surroundings. Winner of the Belgian Art Prize in 1999, she has exhibited at the Venice Biennale, MAC’s Grand-Hornu, BOZAR, the Uffizi Gallery, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, as well as Wiels and TANK Shanghai. Her works are held in numerous public and private collections in Belgium and internationally.
