Marcel Berlanger

Marcel Berlanger learned painting at an early age from his grandfather Walter Hassewer, before continuing his artistic studies at Saint-Luc and ERG with Joëlle Tuerlinckx, Marthe Wéry, Pierre Carlier, among others. Since the 1990s, he has participated in numerous exhibitions in Belgium and abroad. After a long collaboration with Galerie In Situ in Aalst, he is now represented by Galerie Rodolphe Janssen (Brussels) and Nosbaum Reding (Luxembourg). His practice extends into theatre, in
collaboration with his sister Françoise, leading him to move beyond painting into spatial and light-based installations. His work has been presented at WIELS, the van Bommel van Dam Museum and S.M.A.K. Since 1993, he has taught painting at ERG, where he also directs the Master’s program Pratique de l’art – outils critiques, arts et contexte simultanés. Positioned at the intersection of painting, figuration and installation, his work relentlessly explores the inclusion of the figure—its construction and deconstruction—within the image space. His most recent research places light at the heart of perception: it is through its vibrations and pulsations that the image emerges in pictorial space.
